The female beauty representation in the social media

Abstract

The social media play an opinion-forming role, influencing the society through the dissemination of a standardized beauty concept, which corroborates to the self-image distortion triggering psychic suffering that impacts self-esteem. In fact, the female body stands out as the main target of media devices. Therefore, this research aimed to: show the impacts related to the way female beauty is represented in social media and its interference in women's self-esteem. The study is characterized as a qualitative, systematic literature review.  The data were collected from January to August 2022, using articles published in the last 05 years (2017–2022), in Portuguese, and available in the following research databases: SciELO, PePSIC, and the CAPES Journal Portal. The results of this research showed that the female beauty represented in social media indeed not encompass the different types of existing bodies, leading to the establishment of a pattern that triggers psychic suffering. In this way it was shown that among the many consequences, a high index is related to a decrease in self-esteem.
